The -ę, -isz/-ysz Pattern

Full Pattern: -ę, -isz, -i, -imy, -icie, -ią

This is the second major conjugation group. Verbs ending in -ić or -yć in the infinitive usually follow this pattern. The "ja" form ends in -ę (often with a consonant change), and the "ty" form ends in -isz or -ysz.

to speak → I speak, you speak, he speaks, we speak, you(pl) speak, they speak
robić → robię, robisz, robi, robimy, robicie, robią
to do → I do, you do, he does...
lubić → lubię, lubisz, lubi, lubimy, lubicie, lubią
to like → I like, you like, he likes...
uczyć się → uczę się, uczysz się, uczy się, uczymy się, uczycie się, uczą się
to learn → I learn, you learn, he learns...

Watch the "ja" and "oni/one" forms — they often have consonant changes: mówić → mówię (not mówię), but uczyć → uczę (not uczyę). The "się" in reflexive verbs always stays separate.

Comparing Conjugation I vs. II

How to tell the two patterns apart: if the infinitive ends in -ać, it's usually pattern I (-am, -asz). If it ends in -ić/-yć, it's usually pattern II (-ę, -isz/-ysz).

to read → I read
mówić → mówię (pattern II)
to speak → I speak
mieszkać → mieszkam (pattern I)
to live → I live
robić → robię (pattern II)
to do → I do

The key difference: pattern I uses -m in "ja" form (czytam), pattern II uses -ę (mówię). Listen for this when Poles speak!
