The Accusative Case — Direct Objects

When to Use the Accusative

The accusative case marks the direct object — the thing being acted upon. Verbs like mieć (have), lubić (like), kochać (love), widzieć (see), znać (know), and chcieć (want) all take accusative objects.

Mam samochód. (nom: samochód, acc: samochód)
I have a car. (masculine inanimate — no change)
Lubię kawę. (nom: kawa, acc: kawę)
I like coffee. (feminine -a → -ę)
Piję mleko. (nom: mleko, acc: mleko)
I am drinking milk. (neuter — no change)
Znam tego pana. (nom: ten pan, acc: tego pana)
I know this man. (masculine animate — changes!)

The big rule: masculine INANIMATE nouns don't change in accusative. Masculine ANIMATE nouns (people, animals) change like genitive. Feminine -a → -ę. Neuter stays the same.

Accusative Endings Summary

Here are the accusative endings for singular nouns compared to their nominative forms.

Masc. inanimate: dom → dom (no change)
house → house
Masc. animate: kot → kota, student → studenta
cat → cat(acc), student → student(acc)
Feminine: kawa → kawę, książka → książkę
coffee → coffee(acc), book → book(acc)
Neuter: mleko → mleko, piwo → piwo (no change)
milk → milk, beer → beer

For feminine nouns, just change -a to -ę. That covers most cases: kobieta → kobietę, siostra → siostrę, pizza → pizzę.

Personal Pronouns in Accusative

Pronouns Change Too

When pronouns are the direct object, they take accusative forms. These must be memorized.

ja → mnie
me (Kochasz mnie? — Do you love me?)
ty → cię / ciebie
you (Kocham cię. — I love you.)
on → go / jego / niego
him (Znam go. — I know him.)
ona → ją / nią
her (Lubię ją. — I like her.)
my → nas
us (Znacie nas? — Do you know us?)
wy → was
you pl. (Widzę was. — I see you.)
oni/one → ich / nich
them (Znam ich. — I know them.)

"Cię" is the short form of "ciebie" — use "cię" normally, and "ciebie" only for emphasis: "CIEBIE kocham!" (It's YOU I love!).
