Conjugation III: -ę, -esz (-ować) Pattern

The -ować → -uję Pattern

Full Pattern: -uję, -ujesz, -uje, -ujemy, -ujecie, -ują

Verbs ending in -ować in the infinitive change the stem: -ować becomes -uj- before the personal endings. This is pattern III (-ę, -esz type).

gotować → gotuję, gotujesz, gotuje, gotujemy, gotujecie, gotują
to cook → I cook, you cook, he cooks, we cook, you(pl) cook, they cook
kupować → kupuję, kupujesz, kupuje, kupujemy, kupujecie, kupują
to buy → I buy, you buy, he buys...
pracować → pracuję, pracujesz, pracuje, pracujemy, pracujecie, pracują
to work → I work, you work, he works...

The transformation is always the same: drop -ować, add -uj-, then add: -ę, -esz, -e, -emy, -ecie, -ą. Very regular!

Comparing All Three Conjugation Patterns

Now you know all three main Polish conjugation groups. Here is how to identify which group a verb belongs to.

Pattern I (-am, -asz): czytać → czytam
Infinitive in -ać → "ja" form ends in -am
Pattern II (-ę, -isz): mówić → mówię
Infinitive in -ić/-yć → "ja" form ends in -ę, "ty" in -isz
Pattern III (-ę, -esz): gotować → gotuję
Infinitive in -ować → "ja" form ends in -uję, "ty" in -ujesz

The "ty" form is the fastest way to identify the pattern: -asz (I), -isz (II), -esz/-ujesz (III). When you learn a new verb, always check its "ty" form!
