How Numbers Work

Building Compound Numbers

For numbers 21-99, combine the tens and units: dwadzieścia + jeden = dwadzieścia jeden (21). The pattern is straightforward — just put them together.

dwadzieścia pięć
25
trzydzieści dwa
32
pięćdziesiąt siedem
57
dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć
99

Notice that "jeden" (one) changes form by gender: jeden (m), jedna (f), jedno (n). So "21 books" is "dwadzieścia jedna książka."

Asking About Age: Ile masz lat?

To ask someone's age, say "Ile masz lat?" (How old are you?). To answer, say "Mam + number + lat/lata/rok." The word for "years" changes based on the number.

Mam dwadzieścia jeden lat.
I am 21 years old.
Mam trzydzieści dwa lata.
I am 32 years old.
On ma pięć lat.
He is 5 years old.
Ile Pan/Pani ma lat?
How old are you? (formal)

1 → rok, 2-4 → lata, 5-21 → lat, 22-24 → lata, 25-31 → lat... The pattern repeats. When in doubt, "lat" works for most numbers.
